Salingburg is a lookout tower in the Cheb Basin on the outskirts of Františkovy Lázně in the Cheb district of the Karlovy Vary region. It stands at an altitude of 450 m on a small hill called Na Vyhlídce in Slatina, a local part of the spa town. The lookout tower is approximately one kilometer southeast of the spa center.
The German name Salingburg was derived from the former name of the mineral spring waters, which were called Saling.
According to legend, the spirit of the Františkovy Lázně springs, Salinger, resides in the lookout tower.
The lookout tower was built in 1906 to mark the 500th anniversary of the first written mention of mineral springs in the area.
The construction of the lookout tower was initiated by the Františkovy Lázně town hall and the local beautification association, and some local residents also contributed to the construction. Until then, unlike other spa towns, the so-called West Bohemian spa triangle, Františkovy Lázně had no similar building that could serve as a lookout tower. The building was designed by the Františkovy Lázně architect and builder Gustav Wiedermann, and the ceremonial opening took place on September 7, 1906.
The lookout tower was built as a romantic pseudo-Gothic building in the style of a medieval castle. The quarry stone building has two roofless towers. At the top of the higher tower with battlements there is a viewing gallery. At the bottom of the lower tower there is a small fountain with a sitting boy.
The lookout tower is easily accessible via park paths from the spa center of Františkovy Lázně. You can drive to the lookout tower in close proximity by car and park it in Slatina at the Pyramida hotel. The nearest railway station is in Františkovy Lázně, from where it is approximately 2 km to the lookout tower. Orientation is facilitated by signs with a picture of the lookout tower.
The view from the lookout tower is very limited. The lookout tower is not high and the view is obstructed by the surrounding trees.
To the north, across the edge of the Cheb Basin, you can see several hills in Smrčiny near Skalná and Lubů through the trees.
